The Story Of Papa Roach
Coby Dick grew up playing "music" in his garage with garbage cans and baseball bats. Dick also moved out of his parent's house while still in high school and worked at an airforce base hospital to support himself. Jerry Horton, who picked up the guitar because he wanted to learn Metallica songs, didn't go to school with the other members of Papa Roach. In fact, Jerry met the group through his ex-girlfriend who was a big fan of the band.
The band's first gig was actually a 1993 school talent show. After the band performed, Dick's mom heard one of the judges mutter, "I hope they don't quit their day jobs."
Bassist Tobin Esperance grew up listening to his father play bass. At age 10, Esperance was given one of his own. Like father, like son.
As a youth, Dave Buckner took drum lessons from a 70-year-old female jazz drummer. Buckner's talent quickly brought him recognition by being first chair in his school's concert band. After receiving his first drum kit for Christmas, he declared, "I'm sick of this school band crap—I wanna play rock 'n' roll." Buckner's original instrument that turned him onto music was the violin.
Papa Roach's name derives from Dick's grandfather's nickname. While brainstorming a name, the band saw one of Buckner's CD's: a jazz musician named Pancho Sanchez (a.k.a. Papa Gato). The name rang a bell for Dick and he told the band his grandfather's last name was Roatch. To Dick's family, his grandfather was known as Papa Roatch. "For the longtime, it's had nothing to do with my grandpa. We drew up this cockroach logo because we wanted to avoid the weed thing. Weed's okay, but it's not what we are about; we're kinda like the cockroach that can survive anything—we're a tough, warrior-soldier band. We get out there and get the work done
